Is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 Worth It For The Family?

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 is certainly a popular program for photographers. It saves time and thus money. Instead of just handling one image at a time in a bitmap editing program, you can process thousands all at once. But let me ask a question, is it worth it for the average family to purchase a copy?

Let’s consider what a photo shoot will cost a person. (I’m assuming some realistic prices for both cases here. Please note the garbage from JCPenny or other junk services don’t count here, or anywhere for that matter.)

Working With A Professional Photographer

Travel To Meet The Photographer $5.00

Sitting Fee $150.00

Travel Back Home $5.00

Review The Proofs Online $0.00

Order Prints $500.00

Total $660.00

Now lets consider what it would take for the average person to create their own keepsakes if they want to put a little time into the mix.

Do It Yourself Photography

Camera User’s Guide or Book $30.00

Book On Photographic Composition $30.00

Shooting On Location At Home $0.00

Lightroom 2.0 user’s guide $30.00

Lightroom 2.0 $299.00

Order Prints $50.00

Total $409.00

You can easily see a difference of $251 between the 2 methods in getting some quality photographs. It’s even bigger if you just use Lightroom for less than a month and keep it for only the trial. It’s easily worth it for the average family who cares even a little bit about their photos to buy the program.

I can just hear it now, “I don’t have time!” Actually, everyone does have time to learn a new skill. Most of us can pull it off just with the few minutes a day we spend sitting on the toilet. Have you tried it lately?
